How to Add/Edit/Remove album art Embedded in Songs on Windows 8.1

Downloading a song from Internet comes with embedded album art or album cover that is generally promotional to a website. But you might not like it sometimes as it includes the links of the website and it’s awkward to look at or it might not be related to the album.

This type of information or images embedded in audio files such as mp3 songs is called Metadata. Usually this metadata in a usual way doesn’t work. It is also sometimes not possible to download music with album art. So, In this kind of situations, to remove/add picture from/to mp3 song you need some special tools.

What is Audio file Metadata?

Music metadata, which is also commonly referred to as ID3 metadata, is embedded in an audio file that is used to describe certain attributes about its audio contents. The most common reason for using embedded metadata in a digital audio file is for identification purpose and for managing and organizing your library.

Depending on the audio format used, there is a special area (normally at the start or end of the file) that is reserved for metadata that identifies the encoded audio in several ways. Examples of the types of information that can be stored in an audio file’s metadata area include:

  • The title of the song.
  • Album track number.
  • Year the song was released.
  • The Album name.
  • The band or artist’s name.
  • Type of music (genre).
  • and much more.

The first version of ID3 (v1), stores the metadata information at the end of an MP3 file and is allocated space for up to 128 bytes of data. ID3 version2(ID3v2) on the other hand is allocated at the start of an MP3 file and is far more capable and has a much more larger capacity for storing metadata in fact upto 256Mb.

How to add/remove picture from mp3 song

There are several lite tools available online and offline to edit the metadata of the audio file such as album art. The best one I choose to use is Mp3Tag.
Mp3tag is powerful, easy to use yet lite weight tool. Its interface lets the user to edit album art of multiple audio files at once. Batch editing is the most advanced feature of Mp3tag. This is one of the best available audio metadata editor. Using Mp3tag editor, you can edit any number of files at once.

If your MP3 files are named with tags in the file name like album-title-track.mp3, you can select Mp3Tag to convert the naming convention of your files into the actual tags. You can also do viceversa of using the tags to rename the album titles. This becomes handy when searching or your titles are corrupted by some promotional website URLs.

It also allows you to Download and add album covers to your files and make your library even more shiny and even import tags from online databases like Amazon, discogs, freedb, MusicBrainz. Using  Mp3tag you can even create a playlist of your favorite songs when you are editing the metadata of the songs. Besides these this software also supports iTunes-specific tags like media type or TV Show settings everything at a single click.
